Our Investment Casting Process for Defence Components

As defence component casting manufacturers, we use modern lost-wax casting procedures to produce as-cast and machined components.

Molding and investing

  • Investing wax molds in a ceramic slurry for a wet coat (smaller components are attached to a sprue for investing)
  • Placing the molds/trees in a rainfall sander for even stucco distribution.
  • Up to 12 coats and drying cycles for creating robust ceramic casts.

Cast preparation and pouring

  • Introducing ceramic casts into autoclaves to remove moisture and wax.
  • Collecting the molten wax for recycling and reuse.
  • Pouring molten alloy into the hollow negative cavity.
  • Letting the alloy cool down, settle gradually, and take shape.

Casting tree break-out and initial separation

  • Knocking out ceramic shells to extract the parts.
  • Separating each component from the tree.
  • Fettling and deburring stubs and sharp edges.

Planning machining allowance and setup

  • Identifying and marking the requisite surfaces.
  • Assessing the degree and type of machining required.
  • Finalizing fixtures to minimize local distortions.

Primary and secondary machining

  • Rough milling, facing, and drilling the as-cast components.
  • Additional machining for edges and mating faces.
  • Part-specific secondary operations (threading, honing, broaching), as required.

Quality Assurance & Testing Procedures

Quality control measures and inspection procedures help ensure consistent output, dimensional accuracy, and minimal scrappage.

Why Choose Us as Defence Component Casting Manufacturers

Defence contractors and manufacturers across 12+ countries work with us for precision defence investment casting and component manufacturing.

“We had very specific requirements for bullet shells, triggers, and safeties. Vimax was able to not only produce them all, but also match our exact requirements. Our trial run has matured into a 2-year working relationship, and we look forward to continuing this partnership in the future.”

FAQs

Do you manufacture defence investment castings according to customer-specific parameters?

While we have standard parameters based on years of producing defence castings, we can also cast components according to your weight, size, and wall-thickness requirements. For confirmation, please submit an RFQ.

Can you manufacture using custom alloys?

Yes, we regularly produce investment castings for defence components using custom and exotic alloys, including Inconel, Hastelloy, René and other challenging materials.

What firearm platforms do you support for defence component casting?

We support AR-15, AK, and P1167-style platforms by default but have the experience of supporting niche platforms too. For additional details, please reach out to us.

What is your MOQ for defence component casting?

Our MOQ for a project depends on the component, manufacturing complexity, required secondary machining, selected alloy, delivery destination, and other project requirements. To get a quote tailored to your project, please reach out to our team.

What are the requirements for submitting an RFQ?

In your RFQ, please share your CAD drawings, total volume requirements, desired alloy, desired batch-based delivery, tolerance requirements, additional technical details, and delivery destination. We will respond within 7 business days.

What is your lead time as a defence investment casting company?

Our standard lead time for the first batch is 25–40 days, depending on design complexity, manufacturing requirements, and production volume. Subsequent batches take less time.

Ready to move your project forward?

Share your drawings, material specifications, and compliance requirements. We’ll evaluate your application and provide a detailed quotation along with manufacturing recommendations.
